BIOGRAFÍA -
Juan Pinzás
nace en Vigo. Estudia el bachillerato superior en su ciudad natal y se
forma después en el Instituto de Estudios Electrónicos en el que se
diploma. Rueda sus primeros cortos en Galicia en formato de Súper-8
entre los años 1977 y 1980, titulados: "Mónica", "Aconteceu en Galicia"
(Sucedió en Galicia), "O derradeiro Fiana" (El último Fiana), "Amanece
en Vigo", "Reflexión" y "Ensueños", con los que participó en distintos
certámenes nacionales de esta categoría ganando varios premios.
En 1981
consigue productor para rodar su primer corto en formato profesional de
35 mm., "Opus I Homo Hominis", seleccionado por la Mostra Internacional
de Cinema de Sao Paulo y distinguido con una Mención Especial en el
Festival Internacional de Cine Documental y Cortometraje de Bilbao.
En 1982 crea
en Galicia, junto a Pilar Sueiro, la productora cinematográfica PS Films
(Pilar Sueiro Films). A partir de entonces Juan Pinzás se convierte en
uno de los cortometrajistas españoles más prolíficos. Escribe y dirige,
entre 1982 y 1983, 18 cortos de ficción en 35 mm. que fueron exhibidos
comercialmente en los cines de toda España: "Augurio", "Virginal",
"Vestida de fiesta", "Una historia gallega", "El tubo de rayos
catódicos", "Cien puntos para Julián Pintos", "La tercera mujer",
"Añoranzas", "Juego decisivo", "La esfera", "Gula", "Mujer, mujer",
"Carmín", "Hechizo", "El rito", "Muñeca de azul" y "Cinefília".
En 1984
funda con Pilar Sueiro una nueva productora de mayor envergadura,
Atlántico Films, S.A. Escribe y prepara su primer largometraje “La
indiscreta burguesía” que después se titulará “La gran comedia”.
En 1985
rueda su ópera prima como guionista y director, "La gran comedia", que
participó en la 34 edición del Festival Internacional de Cine de San
Sebastián.
En 1991
dirige su segunda película, "El juego de los mensajes invisibles",
basada en la novela "El hijo adoptivo" de Álvaro Pombo, con guión de
Pinzás y Pombo. Participa en numerosos festivales internacionales y
consigue el Premio Glauber Rocha a la Mejor Película en el Festival
Internacional de Cinema de Figueira da Foz (Portugal). El veterano actor
Antonio Ferrandis logrará tres premios en distintos festivales
internacionales por su excelente trabajo en el film.
En 1992 Juan
Pinzás interviene junto a Quentin Tarantino en la mesa redonda celebrada
en Sao Paulo (Brasil), en el marco de la Mostra Internacional de Cinema,
invitados ambos como representantes de la nueva generación de
directores. Tarantino y Pinzás participan además en la Sección Oficial
de la Mostra con sus respectivas películas: “Reservoir Dogs” y “El juego
de los mensajes invisibles”.
En 1994/1995
dirige con guión propio su tercer film, "La leyenda de la doncella",
alzándose con los premios Colón de Plata en el Festival de Cine
Iberoamericano de Huelva, Garza de Oro a la Mejor Película en el
Festival de Cine Hispano de Miami, dos Unicornio de Plata al Mejor Guión
y a la Mejor Fotografía en la Semana Internacional de Cine Fantástico de
Estepona, y Gárgola a la Mejor Actriz en el Festival Internacional de
Cine Fantástico de Burgos. Nominada al Premio Méliès d'Argent del Cine
Europeo en Fantasporto – Festival Internacional de Cinema do Porto.
En 1998
produce la opera prima de Pilar Sueiro, "Cuando el mundo se acabe te
seguiré amando", que la convierte en la primera directora gallega de
largometrajes.
En 2000
escribe y dirige su cuarto film "Era outra vez" (Érase otra vez), la
primera película Dogma del cine español con Certificado Oficial otorgado
por Lars von Trier, con la que representa a España en la Sección Oficial
a Competición del Festival Internacional de Cine de Moscú y participa en
numerosos festivales de todo el mundo. Nominada al San Jorge de Oro a la
Mejor Película por el Festival Internacional de Cine de Moscú, y al
India Catalina de Oro a la Mejor Película por el Festival Internacional
de Cine de Cartagena de Indias.
En 2001 el
Festival Internacional de Cine de Burgos (Eninci) le rinde un homenaje y
proyecta la película “El juego de los mensajes invisibles”.
En 2002 el
Ayuntamiento de Vigo, su ciudad natal, le otorga el título de “Vigués
Distinguido”.
En 2002
rueda con guión propio su quinto largometraje y segundo adscrito al
movimiento Dogma, "Días de boda", consiguiendo de nuevo el Diploma
Oficial otorgado por Lars von Trier. Participa en más de 20 festivales
internacionales y consigue el Premio ACE al Mejor Director de la
Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos de Nueva York (USA). Javier
Gurruchaga logrará el Premio ACE al Mejor Actor de la mencionada
Asociación de Cronistas de Nueva York por su trabajo en el film.
Nominada al Premio Rita a la Mejor Película por Los Ángeles Latino
International Film Festival (USA), a la Manzana de Oro a la Mejor
Película por LaCinemaFe – Latin American Cinema Festival of New York
(USA) y al India Catalina de Oro a la Mejor Película por el Festival
Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias (Colombia).
En 2005
escribe y dirige su sexto largometraje, “El desenlace”, con el que
cierra la trilogía oficial Dogma del cine español y obtiene su tercer
Certificado Oficial del movimiento creado por Lars von Trier. “El
desenlace” triunfa en numerosos festivales internacionales y consigue
destacados premios: Premio Especial del Jurado de LaCinemaFe – Latin
American Cinema Festival of New York (USA). Premio Extraordinario ACE
2006 de Cine para Juan Pinzás de la Asociación de Cronistas de
Espectáculos de Nueva York (USA). Premio ACE al Mejor Actor para José
Sancho de la mencionada Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos de Nueva
York (USA). Premio al Mejor Guión para Juan Pinzás del Miami Latin Film
Festival (USA). Premio de Honor 2006 para Juan Pinzás del Encuentro de
Cine Joven de Nueva York en la Saint John's University (USA). Nominada
al San Jorge de Oro a la Mejor Película por el Festival Internacional de
Cine de Moscú (Rusia).
Juan Pinzás
fue objeto en los últimos años de varias retrospectivas y homenajes en
diferentes festivales internacionales: Festival de Cine de Nápoles 2003
(Retrospectiva y Homenaje junto a los cineastas Carlos Saura y Peter
Greenaway). Festival Internacional de Cine de Praga – Febiofest 2004,
(Retrospectiva). LaCinemaFe – Latin American Cinema Festival of New York
2005 (Homenaje y Retrospectiva). Festival de Cine de Ponferrada, España
2005 (Retrospectiva trilogía Dogma y Homenaje). Festival Internacional
de Cine de Atenas – Platforma 2006 (Retrospectiva trilogía Dogma). Ecole
Supérieure d'AudioVisuel (ESAV) de la Universidad de Toulouse le Mirail,
Francia 2007 (Retrospectiva trilogía Dogma y encuentro con los alumnos).
En 2008 Juan
Pinzás recibe en España el Premio Nacional de Cinematografía Cultura
Viva por la calidad de su trabajo como cineasta. El Jurado reconoce su
aportación a las más avanzadas tendencias cinematográficas.
Actualmente,
Pinzás, codirige con Pilar Sueiro un largometraje documental sobre la
vanguardia cinematográfica Dogma 95, titulado “Dogma: la otra mirada”, y
prepara su nueva película como guionista y director, “La sombra de Nueva
York”, que tiene previsto rodar antes de que finalice el año 2008, entre
Vigo y La Gran Manzana.
Juan Pinzás
ha formado parte del jurado de diversos festivales, como el Festival de
Cine Hispano de Miami, Festival Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva, Semana de
Cine Naval y del Mar de Cartagena, Festival de Cine Xacobeo de
Pontevedra, o Certamen Audiovisual de Vilagarcía de Arousa.
Juan Pinzás
es el único director español reconocido oficialmente en la etapa
histórica del movimiento Dogma 95, la última vanguardia cinematográfica
europea, creada por los cineastas daneses Lars von Trier y Thomas
Vinterberg.

BIOGRAPHY -
Juan Pinzás was born in Vigo (Pontevedra
– Galicia – Spain) where he attended high school and later
graduated from the Institute of Electronic Studies. He shot his
first short films in Galicia in Super-8mm between 1977 and 1980,
entitled: “Mónica”, “Aconteceu en Galicia”, “O derradeiro Fiana”,
“Amanece en Vigo”, “Reflexión” and “Ensueños”. He participated
with them in various national competitions for this category and
won several awards.
In 1981 he found a producer and shot his first
short film in the professional 35mm format, “Opus I Homo Hominis”,
selected for the International Film Festival in Sao Paulo and
distinguished with a Special Mention at the Bilbao International
Festival of Documentary and Short Films.
In 1982, in Galicia, along with Pilar Sueiro he
set up the production company PS Films (Pilar Sueiro Films). After that,
Juan Pinzás became one of Spain’s most prolific short filmmakers.
Between 1982 and 1983, he wrote and directed 18 short fiction films on
35mm. These were exhibited commercially in cinemas throughout Spain:
“Augurio”, “Virginal”, “Vestida de fiesta”, “Una historia gallega”, “El
tubo de rayos catódicos”, “Cien puntos para Julián Pintos”, “La tercera
mujer”, “Añoranzas”, “Juego decisivo”, “La esfera”, “Gula”, “Mujer,
mujer”, “Carmín”, “Hechizo”, “El rito”, “Muñeca de azul” and
“Cinefilia”.
In 1984, again with Pilar Sueiro, he founded a
new, more important production company, Atlántico Films, S.A. He wrote
and prepared his first feature film, “La indiscreta burguesía”, which
was later titled “La gran comedia” (The Great Comedy).
In 1985 he shot his first film as writer and
director, “La gran comedia” (The Great Comedy), which participated in
the 34th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
In 1991, he directed his second film, “El juego
de los mensajes invisibles” (The Game of the Invisible Messages), based

in Huelva, the Golden Egret for Best Film at the Hispanic Film Festival
in Miami, two Silver Unicorns for Best Script and Best Photography at
the Estepona International Week of Fantastic Cinema and the Gargoyle for
Best Actress at the Burgos International Festival of Fantastic Cinema.
Nominated for International Fantasy Film Award Best Film at the
Fantasporto – Oporto International Film Festival.
In 1998, he produced Pilar Sueiro’s first film
“Cuando el mundo se acabe, te seguiré amando” (I’ll still love you, when
the world ends), that made her the first female Galician feature film
director.
In 2000, he wrote and directed his fourth film,
“Era outra vez” (Once Upon Another Time), the first Dogma film in
Spanish cinema with the Official Certificate awarded by Lars von Trier,
and with which he represented Spain in the Official Section of the
Moscow International Film Festival and also participated in countless
festivals around the world. It was nominated for the Golden St. George
for Best Film at the Moscow International Film Festival and for the
Golden India Catalina for Best Film at the Cartagena de Indias
International Film Festival.
In 2001, the Burgos International Film Festival
(Eninci) paid a tribute to him and showed the film “El juego de los
mensajes invisibles” (The Game of the Invisible Messages).
In 2002, the City Council of Vigo, his home
city, awarded him the title of “Distinguished Citizen of Vigo”.
In 2002, with his own script, he directed his
fifth film, and the second which followed the Dogma Movement, “Días de
boda” (Wedding Days), once again obtaining the Official Certificate from
Lars von Trier. He participated in over 20 international festivals and
won the ACE Best Director Award presented by the Association of Latin
Entertainment Critics of New York. Javier Gurruchaga received the ACE
Award for Best Actor from the same Association of New York for his work
in the film. It was also nominated for the Rita Award for Best Film by
the Los Angeles International Latino Film Festival, the Golden Apple for
Best Film by LaCinemaFe – Latin American Cinema Festival of New York and
the Golden India Catalina for Best Film by the Cartagena de Indias
International Film Festival.
In 2005, he wrote and directed his sixth
feature film, “El desenlace” (The Outcome), with which he closed the
official Dogma trilogy of Spanish cinema and obtained his third Official
Certificate from the movement created by Lars von Trier. “El desenlace”
triumphed at numerous international festivals and won several notable
awards: Special Jury Prize at LaCinemaFe – Latin American Cinema
Festival of New York, Extraordinary ACE Cinema Award 2006 for Juan
Pinzás from the Association of Latin Entertainment Critics of New York.
ACE Best Actor Award for José Sancho from that same Association of New
York. Best Script Award for Juan Pinzás from the Miami Latin Film
Festival. Prize of Honor 2006 for Juan Pinzás at the New York Young
Cinema in St. John’s University of New York. Nominated for the Golden St.
George for Best Film at the Moscow International Film Festival.
In recent years Juan Pinzás has been the
subject of retrospectives and tributes in various international
festivals: Naples Film Festival 2003 (Retrospective and Tribute along
with the filmmakers Carlos Saura and Peter Greenaway). Prague
International Film Festival – Febiofest 2004 (Retrospective). LaCinemaFe
– Latin American Cinema Festival of New York 2005 (Tribute and
Retrospective). Ponferrada Film Festival, Spain, 2005 (Retrospective of
Dogma trilogy and tribute). Athens International Film Festival –
Platform 2006 (Retrospective of Dogma trilogy). École Supérieure
d’AudioVisuel (ESAV) at the University of Toulouse le Mirail, France
2007 (Retrospective of Dogma trilogy and a conference with the students).
In Spain, in 2008, Juan Pinzás received the
“Cultura Viva” National Film Award for the quality of his work as a film
director. The Jury recognized his contribution to the most advanced
cinematic tendencies.
In 2008, Juan Pinzás and Pilar Sueiro, are co-directing
a feature length documentary on the cinematic avant-garde Dogma 95,
entitled “Dogma: la otra mirada” (Dogma: The Other View).
At present, Pinzás is preparing his eighth
feature film, “La sombra de Nueva York” (The Shadow of New York) which
he plans to shoot before the end of 2008, between Vigo and the Big Apple.
Juan Pinzás has been a jury member at various
festivals such as the Festival of Hispanic Cinema in Miami (USA), the
Huelva Latin American Film Festival (Spain), the Cartagena Week of Naval
and Maritime Cinema (Spain), the Festival of Jacobean Cinema in
Pontevedra (Spain) and the Vilagarcía de Arousa Audiovisual Festival (Spain).
Juan Pinzás is the only Spanish director
recognized officially during the historic stage of the Dogma 95 movement,
the last European cinematic avant-garde, created by the Danish
filmmakers Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg.
